But Twitter is much more than those things. Twitter can be a powerful resource in helping you to find a job…If it’s used in the right way.
A professional profile
A separate, professional profile is an essential first step, if done right, and well, your profile can stand head and shoulders above the competition. With a clear and concise bio containing your profession, your aims for the future, a professional username and smart, eye-catching profile picture or banner image, you’ll soon be well on your way to getting noticed. A word of caution though; if you are actively seeking another job and you don’t wish for your current employer to know just yet, be careful how you present yourself.
Get your settings right
A professional profile is great to have, but if your privacy settings are set incorrectly, it’s all for nothing, Use the ‘privacy and safety’ tab under ‘Settings’ to allow other users to find you by your contact details, allow direct messaging and don’t protect your tweets if you want them to reach the widest audience possible.
Follow the right people
The people you follow will impact the quality of information in your newsfeed, so keep it focused on the area of work you are interested in. Follow recruitment agencies, jobsites and local business groups and watch for their tweets advertising the very latest vacancies, often they will follow you back, building your reputation as someone worth knowing about.
Tweet the right things, the right way (and at the right times)
A great set of general rules on Twitter are: Keep it polite, keep it engaging and keep it interesting. People, companies and agencies will notice. Engage with them, show your motivation and make interactions inspiring, Often agencies and business groups have dedicated ‘Networking Hours’ wherein companies and individuals can share ideas and information at specific times. You have 140 characters to work with, show them what you’ve got.
Hashtags & Lists
Lists are useful, really useful. You can simply add accounts onto your lists and view their tweets in one easy to digest and highly relevant feed. Lists for Recruitment Agencies and specialists in your field are incredibly useful and can be organised and named individually.
If lists are useful, Hashtags are essential, as they allow other users to search specifically for the words you have used in your tweets and even your profile bio; this allows you to direct your tweets straight at the people you need to connect with, and discover many more in the process. You’ll soon build followers, gain influence and strengthen your chances of getting noticed by the right people, at the right times.
